EFCC Nabs 11 Alleged Internet Fraudsters in Uyo

Uyo, Nigeria – In a decisive operation, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has apprehended 11 individuals suspected of engaging in internet fraud. The arrests were made in the city of Uyo, following detailed surveillance and intelligence gathering by the anti-graft agency.

According to the EFCC, the suspects were taken into custody during coordinated raids on various locations within Uyo. The operation, which took place early in the morning, involved a significant deployment of EFCC operatives who executed search warrants and seized numerous items linked to the alleged fraudulent activities.

Items recovered from the suspects include several laptops, mobile phones, and other electronic devices purportedly used to perpetrate cybercrimes. In addition, incriminating documents, credit cards, and various luxury items were also confiscated during the raids.

The EFCC spokesperson stated, “These arrests are part of our ongoing efforts to combat the rising tide of internet fraud, commonly known as ‘Yahoo Yahoo.’ The suspects will be thoroughly investigated, and those found culpable will be prosecuted in accordance with the law.”

Preliminary investigations suggest that the suspects were involved in a range of cybercriminal activities, including phishing, identity theft, and romance scams. These fraudulent schemes have reportedly defrauded numerous victims, both locally and internationally, of substantial sums of money.

The EFCC has reiterated its commitment to eradicating internet fraud and has called on the public to provide any information that could assist in apprehending other individuals involved in similar activities. The commission also emphasized the importance of digital literacy and security awareness to prevent falling victim to cybercriminals.

The suspects are currently being held in custody and are expected to be charged to court soon. This latest operation underscores the EFCC’s resolve to clamp down on internet fraud and bring perpetrators to justice.
