Commuters and Motorists Frustrated by Delays in Calabar-Uyo Highway Project

Frustration and dissatisfaction are growing among commuters and motorists due to the prolonged delays in the completion of the Calabar-Uyo federal highway. The highway, a crucial link between Calabar and Uyo, has seen numerous setbacks, resulting in traffic bottlenecks, increased travel time, and heightened safety concerns.

Residents and regular users of the route have voiced their grievances, citing the adverse impact on their daily lives and businesses. Many have reported enduring hours-long traffic jams, particularly during peak travel times. The unfinished sections of the highway are marred by potholes and uneven surfaces, posing risks to vehicles and leading to frequent accidents.

“I leave home two hours earlier than usual just to avoid getting stuck,” said Emmanuel Udo, a commuter who uses the highway daily for work. “It’s exhausting and affects my productivity at work.”

Commercial drivers and transport companies have also expressed their discontent, noting the increased maintenance costs and delays impacting their operations. “We’ve had to spend more on vehicle repairs because of the poor state of the road,” explained Janet Edem, a driver for a local transport company. “It’s frustrating for both us and our passengers.”

Government officials have attributed the delays to funding issues and logistical challenges. However, these explanations have done little to appease the affected populace. Calls for more transparency and a definitive completion timeline have intensified, with community leaders urging the government to prioritize the project.

The economic implications of the incomplete highway are significant, as the route is vital for trade and commerce between the two states. Stakeholders are hoping for expedited action to alleviate the ongoing hardships faced by commuters and motorists alike.
