Authorities Uncover Massive N1.9 Billion Data and Airtime Theft from MTN by Student Hackers

Authorities have exposed a massive cybercrime operation in which a group of student hackers stole N1.9 billion worth of data and airtime from MTN Nigeria, one of the largest telecommunications companies in Africa. The shocking revelation was made public following an extensive investigation by law enforcement agencies.

According to the police, the group, comprising students from various universities across the country, exploited vulnerabilities in MTN’s systems to execute the heist. The students reportedly used sophisticated hacking techniques to bypass security measures, gaining unauthorized access to the company’s data network. Over an extended period, the hackers siphoned off vast amounts of airtime and data, which they then sold at reduced rates to unsuspecting consumers.

The operation came to light after MTN detected unusual activities on its network and alerted the authorities. Following the tip-off, a joint task force consisting of cybercrime experts and law enforcement agents was assembled to track down the perpetrators. The investigation led to the arrest of several suspects who were found to have direct links to the hacking activities.

During the raid, the police recovered multiple laptops, mobile devices, and other electronic gadgets believed to have been used in the crime. The suspects are currently in custody, and authorities have vowed to bring all those involved to justice.

This incident has raised concerns about the growing threat of cybercrime in Nigeria, particularly among young, tech-savvy individuals. MTN has assured its customers that the breach has been contained and that measures are being taken to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
