Customs Officer Allegedly Extorts N35,000 from Student Through PoS Agent

A Customs officer has been accused of extorting N35,000 from a student in a dubious transaction involving a Point of Sale (PoS) agent. The incident, which has sparked outrage on social media, reportedly occurred when the student was traveling through a checkpoint.

According to eyewitness reports, the Customs officer initially demanded N150,000 from the student, claiming it was for alleged customs duties. Unable to pay the exorbitant amount, the student pleaded for a reduction. The officer eventually agreed to lower the amount to N35,000 but insisted that the payment be made immediately.

The officer then directed the student to a nearby PoS agent identified as Joy Yakubu, who acted as a conduit for the transaction. The student, under pressure and fearing further harassment, complied and made the payment.

The use of PoS agents in such transactions has raised concerns about corruption and abuse of power within the Customs service. The incident has drawn widespread condemnation, with many calling for an investigation into the officer’s conduct and the alleged collusion with the PoS agent.

This case highlights the growing issue of extortion and misuse of authority by public officials, especially those in law enforcement. Many Nigerians have taken to social media to express their frustration and demand accountability, urging the relevant authorities to take swift action.

As the investigation unfolds, there are increasing calls for reforms within the Customs service to curb such unethical practices and restore public trust in the system.
