Countries around the world in shock over the death of the Iranian President.

Following the death of the Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi, who died in a helicopter crash on Sunday, May 19, 2024. Many of the nations around the world have expressed their sadness over the tragic death of the Iranian president, Ebrahim Raisi, who was a strong supporter of the Palestinian cause.

While mourning his death, many countries like Russia and China called the late president a good friend, but it has been noted that the United States and Israel, who have had some squabbles with Iran over the years, have yet to give any public statements regarding the incident.

Xi Jinping, China’s president, said, in his words, speaking in a regular press conference, “his tragic death is a great loss to the Iranian people, and the Chinese people have lost a good friend.”

The European Union was not left out in this, as they shared their sincere condolences.

“Our thoughts go to the families,” EU Council President Charles Michel said.

Narendra Modi, India’s prime minister, said he was “deeply saddened and shocked by the tragic demise” of Raisi, adding that “India stands with Iran in this time of sorrow.

Russian President Vladimir Putin praised Raisi as an “outstanding politician” and added that his death was an “irreplaceable loss.”

“As a true friend of Russia, he made an invaluable personal contribution to the development of good-neighbourly relations between our countries and made great efforts to take them to the level of a strategic partnership,” Putin said.

Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan said that Turkey was “deeply saddened” by Raisi’s death and that the entire country  “shares the pain of the friendly and brotherly Iranian people.”

In a message on Twitter X, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan sent his “sincere condolences to the friendly and fraternal people and government.”

The Hezbollah group, who has traded deadly cross-border fire with Israel, has sent their condolences and praised Raisi as “a strong supporter, and a staunch defender of our causes, and a protector of the resistance movements”. They also officially announced three days to mourn the death of the Iranian president. 

The rebels from Yemen’s Tehran-backed Huthi remarked that President Raisi’s death “is a loss not only for Iran but also for the entire Islamic world and Palestine and Gaza.” This statement was made on Twitter X by the spokesman, Mohammed Abdulsalam. He also confessed that the Palestinians need a leader who will continue to defend their right to freedom.

 The Gulf States, which are what we know as Iran’s Gulf neighbours, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, and Qatar—have also sent their condolences to Iran.

Emirati President Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan said in the oil-rich UAE that “it stands in solidarity with Iran at this difficult time”.

Qatar’s emir, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani, said that the news is a painful one.

 President Bashar al-Assad, the Syrian president, also expressed their solidarity with Iran, a close ally. Bashar said that Iran has supported him during more than a decade of civil war and that he is grateful.

“We worked with the late President to ensure that strategic relations between Syria and Iran flourish always,” the Syrian presidency said in a statement.
