Abuja Braces for Flood Risk as NiMet Predicts Intense Rainfall in Southern States

Abuja—The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued a warning of potential flooding across several southern states, including Edo, Delta, and Bayelsa, due to anticipated “very heavy” rainfall. The advisory, released this week, underscores the need for heightened vigilance and preparedness among residents and authorities in the affected regions.

According to NiMet, the forecasted deluge is expected to significantly impact communities, infrastructure, and farmlands, with the risk of severe flooding particularly high in low-lying areas and regions with poor drainage systems. The agency has urged state governments and disaster management agencies to take proactive measures to mitigate the potential damage and ensure the safety of residents.

In a detailed briefing, NiMet highlighted that the heavy rainfall is part of a broader weather pattern influenced by the ongoing wet season and climatic conditions in the Atlantic Ocean. The agency noted that while rainfall is essential for agricultural productivity, the intensity and volume predicted could overwhelm existing drainage infrastructure, leading to flash floods and riverine flooding.Edo, Delta, and Bayelsa states, which have a history of flood-related challenges, are particularly at risk.

NiMet’s Director-General, Professor Mansur Bako Matazu, emphasized the importance of community awareness and preparedness. He advised residents to stay informed through weather updates, avoid flood-prone areas, and adhere to any evacuation orders issued by local authorities.NiMet’s forecast also extends to other states in the southern region, including Rivers, Akwa Ibom, and Cross River, all of which could experience similar weather conditions. The agency has recommended that these states enhance their drainage systems, conduct regular de-silting of canals, and strengthen their emergency response frameworks.

As the threat of heavy rainfall looms, federal and state governments are called upon to coordinate their efforts to protect lives and property, ensuring a swift and effective response to any flooding incidents that may arise.
