The Kano distribution electricity distribution company disconnected the university about some weeks ago because of the university’s debt which is over N248 million. This is a situation that has paralysed the institution’s academic programmes.
Prof.Abdulkadir Dambazau who is the Dean of students for the university while narrating the entire ordeal to newsmen said that all attempts to get KEDCO to reconnect the school back to National Grid has not been productive, as they are insisting the institution clear up their debt.
Dambazau said, to make impressive efforts that company will make payment of N20 million, which, according to him, was the university’s enhanced monthly subsidy from the state government to the school.
The university is currently struggling with so many difficulties and ranging from it’s services to students, academic and water supply with a population of over 28,000 people.
“Electricity is critical to the operations of the institution in view of its nature as a University of Science and Technology,” Dambazau said.
The Dean of the school also said that the situation may be a bit lighter when the students return from their end-of-semester break.
He also said that the university has to reduce some load locally in order to lighten the consumption level. He disclosed that after this was done the monthly bill dropped to 50 million.
He also said that currently the university has written to the state Government to assist in anyway possible in order to bail them out of their situation also including that the request is under government consideration.
The Dean also concluded that at the moment, the university is left with three options. The state government intervention, the student, or the school management will be shut down through the institution.
