The fee hike has sparked concern among educational institutions and student advocacy groups. Universities Australia, the peak body representing the nation’s universities, warned that the increased costs could deter prospective students, particularly those from low-income backgrounds. “This decision could make Australia a less attractive destination for international students,” said Catriona Jackson, Chief Executive of Universities Australia. “We urge the government to consider the broader implications on the education sector and our economy.”
International students contribute significantly to Australia’s economy, injecting over AUD 40 billion annually through tuition fees and living expenses. The sector is also crucial in fostering global ties and cultural exchange. Critics argue that the fee increase could undermine these benefits, urging a more balanced approach.
