Lawmaker Raises Alarm Over Overflowing Oil Wells in Akwa Ibom

An Akwa Ibom lawmaker has brought urgent attention to a critical environmental issue affecting his community. The representative expressed grave concerns over several corked oil wells that have begun to overflow, posing significant threats to the local ecosystem and the health of residents.

During his address, the lawmaker detailed the escalating situation in his constituency, where improperly sealed oil wells have started leaking crude oil into surrounding lands and waterways. This has led to widespread contamination, adversely affecting agriculture, fisheries, and potable water sources.

“The situation is dire,” he stated. “These overflowing wells are not only an environmental catastrophe but also a serious public health hazard. The crude oil is seeping into farmlands, destroying crops and livelihoods, and contaminating our water supply.”

The lawmaker called for immediate intervention from both state and federal authorities. He urged the government to deploy emergency response teams to contain the spillage and prevent further damage. Additionally, he emphasized the need for a thorough investigation to determine the root cause of the overflow and to ensure that similar incidents do not occur in the future.

Local residents have expressed their frustration and fear over the situation. Many have reported health issues, including respiratory problems and skin irritations, which they attribute to the oil contamination. Community leaders are demanding swift action to mitigate the impact and to hold responsible parties accountable.

Environmental activists in Akwa Ibom have echoed the lawmaker’s concerns, highlighting the broader implications of such environmental negligence. They stress the importance of enforcing stringent regulations on oil companies to prevent such disasters and to safeguard the environment and public health.

As the situation develops, the affected community awaits a prompt and effective response to address this growing environmental crisis.
