Network Cable Cuts Plague Nigeria: Disruption Grips Telecommunications

Recently, most West African countries, like Nigeria and Ghana, have been experiencing major disruptions in their telecommunications and internet service due to network cable cuts that may have been caused by an undersea cable explosion. This has had a significant effect on SME businesses around the continent.

In Nigeria, news of network cable cuts has started a widespread disruption around the country’s telecommunications system. The incidents have occurred in different regions, and have left millions of citizens without access to their vital communication services, which include mobile services and internet connections.

Different reports from numerous sources show that the cable cuts have been intentional, with the suspect targeting an important network structure. The real reason behind these evil acts of sabotage is still unclear. Still, different speculation indicates they may be connected to criminal activities or attempts to disrupt communications for political reasons.

The recent cable cut has disrupted telecommunication backbone in Nigeria leading to significant challenges for SMEs in their day to day activities.

  1. Economic consequences: The disruption caused by the Network  Cable has resulted in economic consequences,  including delayed responses to customers’ demands online, delays in online transfers and limited access to vital online platforms.
  2.  Internet disruption: The cable cut incident has directly affected users’ access to the internet, especially SMEs who rely on the internet for their operations.
  3. Communication challenges: Good communication has always been the backbone of any profitable business. With the cable cut incident currently happening in Nigeria,  so many SMEs have been unable to communicate effectively with their client or target audience. Voice call disruption,  high rate of call drop,  poor call quality has made businesses unable to interact with their customers and partners.
  4. Diminished potential for growth: The cable cut incident has hindered SMEs from expanding their customer base, which is important for all businesses. To achieve this, a strong and reliable network connection is needed, but unfortunately, the network cable cut is not helping this situation; it is barely helping move the nation to a better economic level.

The effect of the cable cuts has been felt most seriously in urban centres cities like  Lagos, Abuja, and Port Harcourt, where all businesses, governmental infrastructure, and official residents strenuously rely on uninterrupted connectivity for all their daily operations. Additionally, in addition to disrupting mobile phone and internet services, these cable cuts have also affected many e-commerce platforms, financial transactions and other online services, worsening the inconvenience for businesses and individuals.

The Authorities have started investigations into the issues, working at close length with telecommunications companies and the law enforcement agencies to help identify those people who are responsible for the disruptions. Moreover, repairing the damaged infrastructure and making sure the beginning of normal services will take days or even weeks.

The cable cuts in Nigeria exposed the vulnerability of telecommunications structures to purposeful sabotage and outlined the significance of tight security measures to prevent such attacks from happening again. As the investigations continue, Nigerian authorities are advising the public to stay watchful and report any suspicious actions connected to network structures to deter other disruptions.

Meanwhile, all affected businesses and individuals are struggling with the problem caused by the disruptions, outlining the immediate need for better plans and other alternative communication mediums to control the effect of future recurrence.

As Nigeria is working to recover from the effects of these network cable cuts, the issue tends to be a sobering reminder of the essential role that telecommunication structure plays in our modern society and the possible effects of its defenselessness to hostile actors.
