NiMet Issues Thunderstorm Alert as Lagos Intensifies Efforts to Reclaim Drainage Systems

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMeT) has issued a warning about imminent thunderstorms across various parts of the country, with a particular emphasis on Lagos. According to NiMeT, the weather conditions are expected to be severe, potentially leading to heavy rains and strong winds. The agency has urged residents to take necessary precautions to safeguard lives and property.

In response to the impending weather challenges, the Lagos State Government has reiterated its commitment to addressing drainage issues that exacerbate flooding. Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has announced an aggressive initiative to reclaim and clear all drainage setbacks in the city. This initiative is part of the broader effort to enhance the city’s resilience against flooding and other related problems.

The Lagos State Commissioner for the Environment, Tunji Bello, emphasized that the ongoing reclamation of drainage channels is crucial for mitigating the impact of heavy rains. “We are intensifying our efforts to ensure that all drainage systems are free from blockages and encroachments. This will allow for the free flow of water and reduce the risk of flooding, particularly during heavy storms,” Bello stated.

The state government has been conducting a series of inspections and enforcement actions aimed at clearing illegally occupied drainage channels. These activities have included the removal of structures and debris that obstruct water flow. The government has also been engaging with communities to promote awareness and cooperation in maintaining clean and functional drainage systems.

Residents of Lagos are advised to stay informed about weather updates and to adhere to safety guidelines issued by NiMeT and local authorities. The combined efforts of the weather agency’s timely alerts and the government’s proactive measures aim to minimize the adverse effects of the anticipated thunderstorms.

With the weather becoming increasingly unpredictable, Lagos continues to bolster its infrastructure and preparedness to protect its citizens from the dangers posed by extreme weather conditions.
