Russia Denies Allegations of Forcing Nigerian Students to Join War

The Russian government has firmly denied allegations that it has been forcing Nigerian students to participate in its ongoing war. These allegations surfaced after reports emerged suggesting that some Nigerian nationals studying in Russia were being pressured to enlist in the military.

The controversy began when several Nigerian students claimed they had been approached by Russian authorities and encouraged to join the war effort. These students, many of whom are in Russia on educational scholarships, alleged that they were threatened with severe consequences, including deportation and the revocation of their visas, should they refuse to comply. These claims have sparked outrage both in Nigeria and internationally, leading to calls for a thorough investigation into the matter.

In response, the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a statement vehemently denying the allegations. The statement emphasized that Russia has not and will not force any foreign nationals, including Nigerian students, to serve in its armed forces. “Russia respects the sovereignty of all nations and the rights of individuals within its borders,” the ministry stated. “These accusations are baseless and are part of a smear campaign to tarnish Russia’s international reputation.”

The Nigerian government has also weighed in, with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressing deep concern over the reports. Nigerian officials have called for an immediate investigation to ensure the safety and welfare of their citizens abroad. “We take these allegations very seriously,” a ministry spokesperson said. “The safety of Nigerian students is of utmost importance, and we will not tolerate any form of coercion or intimidation against our nationals.”

International human rights organizations have urged both governments to address the issue transparently and protect the rights of the students involved. The situation remains tense as further details emerge, and both Russian and Nigerian authorities continue to navigate the diplomatic repercussions of these serious accusations.
