Prof.Benard Odoh, the former secretary of the Ebonyi state government,has suggested that Nigeria should use more of its expertise in the global raw material market in order to stay relevant.
He said that the geopolitical tension is straining the global supply chain including environmental regulations and logistical challenges.
Odoh made this suggestion after president Bola Tinubu had appointed the director general and chief Executive Officer of Raw material Research and Development Council(RMRDC) to be Prof.Nnayelugo ike-Muonso, an appointment Odoh described as a ‘square peg in a square hole’.
Prof. Odoh, who is a Geophysicist, has said that innovation in raw material processing is the avenue for staying relevant in the global market.
He also stated that involving experts in critical areas will help the federal government achieve its goals thereby putting the country on a sound scientific and technological plane.
During a chat session with some reporters in Abuja, the Prof.Obah stated that he recalled ike-Muonso’s expertise in scientific research and for the federal government to choose him means that they are ready for global strategic thinking for the global raw material economy.
He said that the raw materials are necessary to help boost Nigeria’s economy as it also serves as a backbone for many other industries, innovation that will all contribute to the growth of the GDP.
In his words, “The council, by leveraging Prof. Ike-Muonso‘s economic expertise, can better align its research and development efforts with national economic goals and interests.“
Odoh also added, “As the driver of the research council, Prof. Ike-Muonso‘s background as a professor of economics undoubtedly equips him with the analytical prowess necessary to navigate the complexities of global raw materials markets.
“Understanding the economics of supply and demand, pricing mechanisms, and the macroeconomic impacts of raw materials is crucial for effective leadership at the RMRDC.“
He added that the appointee‘s expertise would ensure that the council makes data-driven decisions aligning with global trends and national interests.
Prof. Odoh also said that global energy sector is faced with Many supply chain issues, especially with raw materials like nickel, lithium and other earth elements that are rare in Nigeria.
“These materials are essential for renewable energy technologies and electric vehicles, with demand outstripping supply and causing market volatility,“ he said.
