Tunji Balogun To Transform Def Jam To ‘Global Black Music’

Tunji Balogun, the Nigerian-American CEO of DEF JAM, plans to turn his iconic music label into ‘global black music’.

The Chairman of DEF JAM has already started laying out plans to transform his record label into a global leader in black music.

The mission is to transform DEF JAM’s legacy by revising its image and reshaping its future. Balogun Tunji took up the role of DEF JAM CEO in January 2022 and has since been working on the label’s roster. As reported on the billboard, he even signed up for renounced artists like Coco Jones and Muni Long Armani White.

The label received much criticism and raised questions about its future, which made it difficult for Tunji Balogun to join.

The record label has faced some years of challenge and disruption, which began with Russell Simmons, one of their signees, who left in 2017 after being accused of sexual assault by different ladies, which he denied.

But when Balogun entered the system, his first assignment was to reclaim the integrity of the legendary record label known for its role in the growth of hip-hop by bringing in big artists like Coco Jones, Public Enemy, Rihanna, Jay-Z, and others.

He came in with a good reputation for a record label that was declined by many. Tunji Balogun had worked with people like H.E.R, Kendrick Lamar, Khalid, Normani, etc.

Before 2023 ended, DEF Jam’s market share was about 0.64% prior to Balogun’s arrival, and the label’s market showed a three-year decline. Balogun Tunji has his eyes now on global extension as he steers the wheel with a list of staring artists like Coco Jones and Armani White. He has also signed in a new artist, Dancehall, Masicka, and afrobeat singer Adekunle Gold, as well as Odumodublvck, who is in partnership with Native Records.

He is currently focused on liberating and nurturing DEF JAM artists, and he is also interested in bringing in the next generation of talented artists. He is bringing back the core aim of DEF Jam, which is artist development, and this will be featured in breaking new music acts.

Def Jam will be celebrating its 40th anniversary this year, and Balogun is 100 percent positive that his plans to transform the label into a ‘Global Black Music’ will come true and solidify its respectability in the music industry.
