Two Arrested in Edo for Alleged Theft of Palliative Rice

The Edo State Police Command has arrested two individuals in connection with the theft of palliative rice intended for vulnerable communities. The suspects were apprehended in a swift operation following a tip-off from local residents in Benin City.

According to police reports, the stolen rice was part of a government relief effort aimed at supporting low-income families struggling with the current economic challenges. The suspects were caught red-handed while attempting to transport several bags of the stolen rice to an undisclosed location.

Edo State Police spokesperson, SP Chidi Nwabuzor, confirmed the arrests, stating that the police were able to recover the looted items during the operation. “We received credible intelligence from vigilant members of the community, which led to the swift arrest of the suspects. The stolen palliatives have been recovered, and we are conducting further investigations to determine if there are additional accomplices,” he said.

SP Nwabuzor also emphasized that the police would continue to work tirelessly to ensure that such acts of theft do not undermine the state’s efforts to support its most vulnerable citizens. He urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to the authorities.

The suspects are currently in police custody and are expected to be charged to court once investigations are concluded. The incident has sparked outrage among residents, who have called for stricter measures to protect relief materials from being diverted or stolen.

This incident highlights ongoing concerns about the distribution and security of palliative materials across the country as the government continues to address the economic impact of recent challenges.
