University of Edinburgh and British Council partner to sponsor all post-doctoral researchers from Nigeria and other countries.

The University of Edinburgh and British Council formed a partnership. This partnership was done with the Institute for Advanced Studies in the Humanities (IASH) at the University of Edinburgh as they announced the sponsorship of all post-doctoral researchers in Nigeria and other countries; this will be done to mark the 90th anniversary of the British Council, holding later in the year.

This program will be operational for 12 months, beginning from January 2025, and will be accessible to all post-doctoral researchers in any country where the British Council is operational, including Nigeria and other countries.

The fellowship organizer has stated that eligible fellows will receive a bursary of £2,500 per month, travel expenses, desk space, access to a library, and academic mentorship.

The fellowship is aimed at fostering research topics needed in the area of Arts, education, and the English language as outlined in the British Council’s strategy. It is also essential for international relations and soft work, international development, cultural diplomacy, and cultural relations.

Those who will be selected will be expected to interact with the British Council through the program. They also have an option to spend time in a British Council office in their country which will serve as a knowledge exchange component.

The members, also called fellows, will spend the first ten months of their fellowship at IASH. Afterwards, they will spend an extra two months based in their home countries with their focus on knowledge exchange and dissemination.

In the coming years, there will be an additional round of fellowship as a reward for being a part of the program, beginning from January 2026 to January 2027.

Eligibility criteria to be part of the University of Edinburgh and British Council sponsorship

The applicants must be early-career individuals after or seven years of completing their PhD.

ODA recipient country is where all applicants must be based and where they will be qualified to undertake post-doctoral level research.

The major objective of the fellowship is to generate new knowledge that will build or complement British Council data.

The program is also aimed at supporting international capacity building and professional development of new research experts from qualified countries.

It will also help to strengthen a longer connection network and partnership between the UK and other international researchers.

It also promotes academic engagement and professional networking of the British Council staff and their parents.
